LookBack 2010: Traveling around and being independent

2010 is the year when I experienced something different. Traveling alone, no family members, no friends, no colleagues, just me, myself and I. I’m grateful that I’ve got the opportunity to travel around and made many new friends. Thanks to Facebook, I’m glad that I’m still in contact with my friends who are in the different parts of the world.

With wifey not around with me, I’ve got to do everything myself and seriously, I thought I couldn’t survive but I did it. I need a morning call from Singapore daily and I miss home really much. I remembered my friend K told me that it was written on my face that I miss home very much. Every conversation that we had, I will talk about wifey, Ethan and Ezanne.

Traveling gave me another perspective in life. It brought me to places where I’ve never dreamt of going, in this case, Vientiane, Laos. I remembered walking along the streets late at night and seeing children all around us selling chewing gum and asking for money. We don’t see that in Singapore and I will never allow my children to do that. I just thought to myself, how lucky we are… Really. It also gave me the chance to understand the different cultures in the different countries.

Traveling gave me the chance to visit places where I’ve been to before. Hong Kong, pretty much the same 3 years on, but what was different was I was more independent, able to travel alone, taking the MTR and exploring places myself.

In 2010, my most memorable trip will be the one in Laos. Experience, learn and adapting to a different lifestyle was definitely a difficult but enriching one. If I’ve ever had the chance, I will definitely want to visit Laos again.

There are some traveling plans in 2011 and I hope it will be as enriching as the ones in 2010.
