Kiasu parents, are we?

I came across a tweet by @Melvin_Guo and it started to made me wonder if I’m behaving like the mother he mentioned.

As far as I remember, I don’t think I’ve ever compared Ethan with other children. I don’t think its right to compare your kids with others, since every kid develop differently, some are fast, some are slow, some like this and some like that.

While we want to give the best for our kids, to let them have a memorable childhood, I thought its the society that isn’t giving them a chance. I remember there were 2 incidents when I wanted to register Ethan for an enrichment course. Then, Ethan was 3.5 years old and still learning how to write. So when I wanted to register him for a course, the receptionist told me, “Does he know how to write?” I replied, “A little” Then she said, “Ah, he better know how to write cause the teacher doesn’t have the time to teach at all!” In the end, I gave up and did not enrol him.

The 2nd incident happened recently when I wanted to enrol him for another enrichment course. Well, the receptionist told me that he is supposed to sit for a test and  they will only take him in IF he pass the test. WHAT? We want to go for enrichment class because we want you to help us, but even before helping us, you are discriminating children who can’t do well in your school? Anyway, I still put him on the waiting list.

Based on these 2 incidents, do you think parents want to be kiasu? I don’t think so but rather, its how the society has evolved that has made all these happened.
