KKH vs Thomson Medical

I was reading through my tweets and one particular tweet about my friend’s choice of going to a private hospital for her future delivery prompted to blog about the comparison between KKH and Thomson Medical. Firstly, I will like to clarify that I did not choose to go to a private hospital for our 3rd child but since our gynae has left KKH, we decided to move with him since it did not cost much between the public and private hospital.

As a private patient in KKH, we had high expectations and 4 years ago, it did not fail us. We had personalised service like seeing our gynae in the evenings, able to do the ultrasound scan in the consultation room, shorter waiting time, friendlier service and at least, more time with our gynae to find out more about the pregnancy. In case you didn’t know, in KKH, if you are a subsidized patient, you need to go through a considerable waiting time, different ultrasound scanning and consultation room and only day consultation.

4 years on, I felt personally that there is no difference being a private patient in KKH. The number of people consulting at The Private Suite has grown significantly and the waiting time has increased too. It could easily be a 30 to 45 minutes wait. The collection of medication has also became quite a hassle since we got to queue up with subsidized patient at the pharmacy.

With our gynae moving to a private hospital, Thomson Medical to be exact, we could experience for ourself the difference. First, one of the major difference we could experience was how powerful their ultrasound scanning equipment was. I could see my little one more clearly and of course, other than printed copies, my gynae could now save soft copies of the images and VIDEOS as well. Waiting time drop significantly and of course, with lesser patients now, our gynae was able to spend more time with us.

So if you can afford, I thought it will be better to be a patient at a private hospital rather than being a private patient in a government hospital. Although personally, I felt that I didn’t really pay much more.

I was surprised to hear some of my friends spend half and hour to an hour waiting to have their ultrasound done. They all went to KKH but I chose a private hospital coz my MIL knows the doc & my ultrasound was done in 5 minutes. We got to know everything. Doc showed us everything. Head. Legs. Hands. Eyes. Heartbeat. If she was doing fine. Everything in detail in 5 minutes!
