Does award really matters?

On CNY Eve, I received a SMS from a friend saying that he wanted to nominate himself for Best Staff & Support Officer for the year. The reason, cause I got it last year and he doesn’t want to lose to me and what’s more, he wants to show off to the staff in his unit that he can really make it. He also felt that he has given alot for the past year (I think when you work, don’t think about any awards or recognition first, concentrate on what you are doing, if it comes it will come).

Personally, I think what disturbs me most was how he wanted to tap on my “group project” (for info, though its termed at group project, but I’m the one who is consolidating all the information, doing the programming, liasing and ensuring the project will be up and running by 1 March) for the coming award.

To me, it feels good to be given an award, but it got to be given by the bosses and management. So when the bosses tells you about your nomination, it will come as a pleasant surprise and you will feel good and proud about it. But telling your boss that you want to nominate yourself is something that I will never do, cause its not the bosses who are recognising you, its you recognising yourself, which I don’t feel shiok about it.

After this incident, I don’t know why but felt scary. Are people around me always competing with me? Why do people wants to compete with me and worst still, free-loading the things that I’ve done on themselves?
